Field Service KPIs That Actually Matter in 2026

Every field service leader has a dashboard. Most dashboards have 20+ metrics. Most of those metrics don't predict anything that matters.
Here's what ten years of benchmarking data tell us about which KPIs actually correlate with customer retention, Field Service Engineer productivity, and margin — and which ones are vanity metrics you can retire without anyone noticing.
The 8 KPIs that matter
After reviewing public field service benchmarks from Aquant, Service Council, Gartner, and IFS, the short list looks like this:
1. First-Time Fix Rate (FTFR) — the single best predictor of customer satisfaction and repeat revenue.
2. Mean Time to Repair (MTTR) — drives SLA compliance and downtime cost for the customer.
3. SLA Compliance Rate — the contractual KPI your customers actually grade you on.
4. Customer Satisfaction (CSAT) on service visits — leading indicator of churn.
5. Field Service Engineer Utilization — the margin ceiling on your service business.
6. Revenue per Field Service Engineer — the margin floor.
7. First Dispatch Accuracy — did we send the right person and parts for the ticket?
8. Cost per Service Event — the aggregate reality check on all of the above.
Everything else — average time on-site, miles per dispatch, ticket escalation rate — is either a sub-component of these eight or a vanity metric that doesn't move margin. If your dashboard has 20 metrics and you're not sure which to cut, cut anything that isn't in the list above.
What "good" looks like by industry

The takeaway: if you're below these numbers in your vertical, there's a real operational gap to close. Knowledge coverage — what % of active tickets does our documentation actually cover? Gaps here predict escalations and repeat visits before they happen.
Senior Field Service Engineer saturation— is your most experienced person booked > 85%? When your senior tech is oversubscribed, MTTR starts creeping up immediately on any ticket that would have been escalated to them.
Track these weekly. They predict your lagging KPIs with ~2 weeks of lead time, which is just enough to course-correct before the month closes.
Why AI changes which KPIs you can improve
For 20 years, field service KPIs were basically flat. Aquant's 2015 benchmark data looks remarkably similar to 2023 data: FTFR hovered at 70%, MTTR at 5 hours, utilization at 68%. The industry had largely exhausted what was possible with better routing, better training, and better parts inventory.
2024 is when that started to change.
